Injuries

I've been pretty much injury-free since I started training for marathons three years ago. Besides a few "injuries" of the psychosomatic persuasion, I never really have had an injury that's stopped my training.

This time, however, I think I might have a problem.

There's a very common injury that runners can get called plantar fasciitis, and I think I might have it. I have all of the symptoms and I've tried treating it at home with daily stretches, rolling my foot and heel on a frozen water bottle or rolling pin and taking Ibuprofen. I haven't, however, eased up on my running, which probably is THE most important thing I need to do. But do you know how hard that is??? And what's not helping me in that area is that I don't really have pain when I run; it's usually painful first thing in the morning and when I get up after sitting for long periods of time.

I'm calling Linn's podiatrist tomorrow to see if I can get in to see him. From what I've been reading -- i.e. freaking out about -- is that recovery time could be 6 to 8 weeks. THAT doesn't sound good. But, I have no idea what's really wrong with me, so I can't just ASSUME. Ya know?

Anyway, that's where I stand. Painfully. I'll keep you updated.

I go through bouts of PF - what helps me during a huge flare up is to be rolling my foot pretty constantly. I bought a plastic roller thing that's supposed to be good for PF, but a baseball or a frozen water bottle works just fine too. I make a point to do it while sitting at work. I still wake up stiff, but I get through it.

Yes, to truly "heal" it, I would need to lighten up on the running, but... healing is overrated :)
